 I was in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina hit, and before it hit it was a really fun place to visit.  If you’re in San Diego then there is two things that I would definitely recommend. Number one, do not stay in the city, it’s fairly boring, not much to do. If it’s even remotely warm there is an area about 15 minutes out of town called Mission Beach. If you are interested in nice beaches and good nights out it’s definitely the place to stay.
